chaos in seattle

last thursday, tim messaged me online while we were at work, and pasted a weather alert for seattle forcasting record wind & rain for thursday night. we both laughed it off, discounting the significance of the weather alert and thinking.. it couldn't be that bad yeh?

less than 24 hrs later,

"The region’s worst windstorm in more than a decade struck on Thursday, knocking out power to more than 1.5 million homes and businesses. Wind gusted to 113 mph during the storm near Mount Rainier and to a record 69 mph at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport."

friday morning, we woke up on with no electricity. 80% of the eastside was out of power. the roads were chaotic, traffic lights were out, debris scattered everywhere & every few blocks there were trees fallen across the road, blocking traffic and bringing down power lines.

outside our apt: a fallen tree blocking the road and bringing down power lines

microsoft campus was closed and since my apt is in downtown bellevue, me & frances layered up in our winter wear and ventured out to the retail district to examine the chaos and destruction brought by the storm. it was like a scene from a doomsday movie. the roads were gridlocked with cars, there was debris everywhere, the supermarkets were packed with ppl buying anything they could find left on the shelves.

we searched for a warm lunch but found nearly all resturaunts were closed because they had no power. we finally found 2-3 blocks on the outskirts of downtown bellevue that still had power but the resturaunts all had several hour wait times for a table. we finally settled for this small packed mexican resturaunt, waiting a good 1.5 hrs to get our warm burritos and nachos. during that 1.5 hr wait, we saw the resturaunt close their doors because they had completely run out of food.

our power came back saturday morning which made us one of the very lucky ones. even today, 5 days after the storm hit, there are still 150,000 homes without power. considering nights in seattle are typically a few degrees below freezing point, our hearts go out to those who are still without power. its been great though to see how the community has responded to the crisis, with ppl with power opening their homes & providing shelter, warm meals and hot showers to family & friends without power.

'woman' in the window

once a week on the way to work i drive past this house with a window.  in the window lives this 'woman'.  every week shes up to something new.  one week british house maid, another week scuba diving chick, and another week red indian princess.  it makes driving to work even more exciting just to see what shes up to.  on my last week at work i had to take a photo, she must have dressed up just for the occassion.

i  wonder what her name is , i wonder what she is thinking, i wonder what she has been up to, i wonder if she has been naughty or nice.

foot relief
Written by Frances Mak

for my birthday my beautiful cousin treated me to a foot treatment to relax and indulge.  last week i decided i really needed it.  of all things my feet get the most neglected and abused so it was really nice to give them  some attention.   i had my feet scrubed, masked, massaged, moisturised, filed, buffed and polished.  they felt like heaven, relaxed and pampered like it has never been.  and then...i went out.

i put on my favourite pair of killer heels and headed out for drinks.  after stumbling around the cbd and northbridge and trying to bust a move on the dancefloor, my feet were literally death.  and then i did the worse imaginable thing ever.  i took off my heels and walked around northbridge barefoot *gasp* definitly not the best way to end a day of foot pampering.  my feet are never going to forgive me.

turning the pages

i dont think ive read a novel since highschool.  ive read books and text but not something with a beginning, middle and an end.  its been so long that i was scared id forgotten how to read.

these days so many novels are made into movies.  it just seemed so much easier and instantly gratifying to just watch the movie and get it all visually played out for you.  sometimes you dont even need to think, just visually absorb it and an hour and a half later its all over.

i started to wonder, would i have the patience to sit through the whole book, if i read bits would i forget what i had read before, is my imagination too desensitised that i wont be able to visualise the written imagery, have i become one of those people who have lost appreciation for the simple pleasures before the bombardment of media and technology.

i decided it was time to start and i was going to start simple so i chose the thinest novel i could find, the wife of martin guerre.  it took a while to get into the swing of reading but after a while i started wondering why i didnt get back into it earlier.  when i finished i had such a sense of achievement.  now im ready to take on my next novel, maybe this time something longer than just three chapters.
