feb 14th, the day guys dread the most? what do i do? what do i say? what do i buy? our society tells us that this is the one day we're ment to show love to our partners. does this mean every other day we put them on the backburner in our lives? haha i hope not.. its amazing to see what valentines day has become. the commercialisation of this day in the US is much much much worse compared to australia. restaurants are booked out months in advance. all of them have "special menus" which are really just their normal menus except with hiked up prices. it's very difficult to find a decent restaurant in seattle that doesn't charge a "reservation fee" just to have dinner on this day. finally the price of red roses are increased by 50% nearly a week before the actual day. we decided to spend our first valentines together in seattle by eating in & sharing a bottle of white wine. i cooked frances what i must say was a scrumptious crumbled chicken and zucchini marinara pasta. after dinner we were ment to go out and watch a movie together, but after frances suggested "can we just stay in and watch a video? i cant be bothered getting changed", so we ended up watching a few episodes of scrubs and then the movie "the pursuit of happiness". all in all, a perfect valentines day with my special girl. frances (unsuccessfully) trying to open the bottle of white wine
 our "romantic" dinner :)

all throughout college, a few of us (tim, janlyk, dzuy, nhat, sukkwan etc...) would have this common slogan "work hard, play hard". this ment that when we needed to do work, we'd put our heads down for weeks straight if necessary and get the work done. then when there was no work to do, we'd be out enjoying ourselves. coming to microsoft, i was a bit scared that it would only be "work hard". however after being here an year, i've been pleasantly suprised that the culture here is also "work hard, play hard". when we have deadlines due, it wouldn't be unusual for the team to all work until 9pm. however, when we don't have any deadlines, it wouldn't be uncommon for the team to "work from home" or work half days. in terms of "play hard", microsoft is very good at that. every 2nd week we have office drinks where there's free flowing drinks and party food. every 2-3 months we have some sort of release party where the team hires out a nice venue and there's drinking, eating and playing, all covered under the team's budget. for example, today we had a release party at the super classy venue - "the parlor billards & spirits" where we had good food, free flowing liquour and free pool. the team even hired a professional pool player to teach us how to play pool properly. i'm very thankful to be working for a company where we also "work hard, play hard" like we did back in college. |

we were walking around seattle pike markets when we came across a cowboy on the side of the streets. a cowboy playing guitar, naked.
so we did the only logical thing at the time, we sat in a coffee shop that had full view, drank coffee and ate donuts while enjoying the eye candy. only in america. |
